Il grandioso taglio roccioso fu eseguito in epoca romana per un’altezza di 128 piedi (circa 38 m), allo scopo di consentire il passaggio dell’Appia in prossimità del mare; esso conserva i cartelli incisi con l’indicazione, in cifre romane, dell’altezza progressivamente raggiunta. La porta a ridosso del Pisco, sormontata da uno stemma forse appartenente a Pio VI, è una costruzione seicentesca di un vecchio passaggio medievale posto a controllo del punto più stretto fra il monte e il mare, annesso a una fortificazione di cui rimangono resti moderni sul Pisco.

A long cut the rock was carried out in the Roman period so that the Via Appia may run along the sea: the cut is 128 feet high (about 38 metres). You can see the engraved signs with indications in Roman numerals showing the height reached progressively. Close behind the Pisco is a gate with a coat of arms on it belonging, perhaps, to pope Pius VI; the gate is a seventeenth century reconstruction of an old medieval archway which was the narrowest checking point between the mountain and the sea; and it was part of a fortification whose modem ruins are on the Pisco.
