L’area adibita a giardinetti conserva i resti del molo rettilineo settentrionale del porto antico; altre strutture appartengono ai granai o Magazzini dell’Abbondanza, costruiti sul molo romano per volontà di Pio VI nel 1781-86 e andati distrutti nell’ultima guerra. Essi costituirono, insieme al Palazzino Camerale posto sulla testata est, l’esempio più significativo del razionalismo neoclassico applicato non solo al riuso e alla reinterpretazione delle strutture antiche, ma anche alla grande architettura funzionale.   

The pier of Roman Port and granai dell’abbondanza

The area, which today is used as a small park, keeps the remains of the north rectilinear pier of the ancient port: some other structures belong to the Granai (storehouses) or Magazzini dell’Abbondanza; they were built on the Roman pier under pope Pius VI in the years 1781-1786 and they were destroyed during the last world war. Together to Palazzino Camerale, which is on the east head, they were the most important examples of the neo-classical rationalism applied not only to use and follow again the ancient structures, but also to the great functional architecture.
