In Via Batteria sono visibili i resti delle volte che coprivano i magazzini posti sul molo curvilineo del porto romano. L’attuale porto-canale, previsto in forme diverse già nel 1777, fu realizzato per volontà del papa Gregorio XVI e completato dopo il 1843; i lavori consistettero nello scavo, all’interno dell’antico bacino portuale da tempo insabbiato, di un nuovo tratto del Canale di Navigazione e nella costruzione, verso est, del braccio del nuovo molo.    

Vaults of the roman port storehouses and porto Gregoriano

In Via Batteria are the ruins of the vaults which covered the storehouses located on the curvilinear pier of the Roman port. The present canal-port, already planned in 1777 with different style, was built under pope Gregorio XVI and finished after 1843; inside the ancient dock, under the sand since a long time, a new part of the canal was excavated and a new pier was built on the east side.
